How do you go about finding appreciable living space in a room or shared dwelling? The first step in this process is to know what you are looking for. Many people, especially those on this site, find safety and security as paramount. Trust and accountability should also be at the forefront of your mind as well as any other person directly involved in this transaction. The residence should fit a certain criteria (according to your needs).
Does the home or apartment offer all the amenities (preferably included in rent)?
-Access to a living area, kitchen, bathroom facilities necessary to live comfortably and safely
-High speed internet
-Off street parking
-Private room (always spell out any additional privacy needs or expectations)
-Clear understanding on any time curfews on entry or exit
-Clear understanding on shared chores, especially common areas (i.e. bathroom, kitchen, etc.)
The best way to get close if not exactly what you want is to have a clear picture of your expectations, and a non-negotiable stance on those things that are… non-negotiable.
Also, make sure you understand the needs and deal breakers according to the potential landlord. This is a relationship in the making; honesty and upfront, candid communication prevents disappointment in the future. Remember to always listen to what your gut is telling you. If it feels strange, find out why. Ask more questions. Make sure you don’t overlook any personality conflicts you might see (or feel). Have an agreement in writing.
If you are a targeted individual, (depending or your level of targeting) my opinion is you may want to discuss some of what you are experiencing with your potential roommate. This is to lay all your chips on the table and to perhaps weed out being the target of a landlord/roommate. If you need extra amenities or special retrofitting for your own safety and security, this is the time to make those needs known. If you are considering being a roommate with another TI or several TIs this could be advantageous for all concern. Again candor and being forthright is invaluable.
